Influenster: My Shining Moment featuring Sally Hansen Triple Shine

Hello there! Today I wanted to share with you the story of my first solo road trip/ business trip!

I drove by myself down to Columbus for a 3 day business trip at The Ohio State University, which I was a bit nervous about. I've never taken a trip by myself, stayed at a hotel by myself, or spent time with my boss for so long! :P

For some reason, the color is really off here...

Luckily I had painted my nails with Sally Hansen's Triple Shine polish in Reef-Raff, which made me relax about my nails. This stuff goes on in one coat (this is two because I missed some areas on the sides of my nails) and doesn't even need a topcoat. Look how shiny it is!

I also didn't have to worry about chipping my tips, which gave me the confidence to tackle all the hands-on work I had to do for iTunes U. And since it was such a simple look, I didn't have to face the uncomfortableness that sometimes arises from too much attention focused on my nails. All-in-all, wearing this made my trip enjoyable and allowed me to shine around my colleagues!

I received this complimentary item for testing purposes from Influenster. Want to join? Send me a message for an invite!

A Day Late... Christmas Skittles!

Hey there! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas holiday and (maybe) enjoyed some time off of work. Sorry I've been so scarce... I've been swamped with work and took my first ever business trip last week! Keep an eye out for my next post for more info on how that went. ;)

As for the look I have today, it's my traditional Christmas skittles! There's just something so fun about this time of year and all the nail art possibilities that I can't help but mix up my look with 10 different designs.

This year we've got a doticure, penguin, gold glitter bomb, green with red glequins, and a glitter half moon on the left hand. On the right, we have a glitter striped pinky, glitter bomb with heart rhinestones, snowman, snowflakes, and candy stripes. Whew! Not my best work, or the most creative, but it's enough for the season!

Orange Saran Wrap Mani

Hey there! Today I've got a simple look to share-- an orange saran wrap manicure. Doing these are so, so easy! Paint on your base coat and let it dry, paint on your second color, then quickly pat the nail with crinkled up saran wrap. Add your glitters and top coat and there you go! A quick mani that's super pretty.

Copy Cat: Jelly Pumpkins

Hey there! Today I've got a late-ish Thanksgiving design to share. This is my rendition of Adventures in Acetone's Pond Pumpkin nail art. I saw this and instantly went "OMG! I have the polish to recreate this! And how adorable!" So I gave it a try for Thanksgiving and this is what I ended up with.

Picture taken in my bathroom under yellow-ish lights.

This is 5 coats of OPI and 4 different "layers" of white pumpkins. It turned out super cute and had more depth than my crappy picture shows. The only bad thing about this mani cure was the polish removal... stain city! :(

Yuck! And this was after I did a baking soda soak to get the major staining off... yikes! Also, I definitely picked this polish off since it was so easy to peel (as a jelly). BAD! You can totally see the white marks on my nails from the damage... bad bad bad...

Fall Chevrons

Hey there! Today I've got a super fun look that I couldn't stop staring at when it was on my fingers!

I got this idea from work / play / polish's guest post here... except she used neons. I've wanted to do this look ever since I saw it but I didn't get around to it until now.

It's so luminous and warming and pretty and yes! It took a bit of time, but it was totally worth it! I started off with the white base, used striping tape to mark everything off, then painted in the colors. Add in some top coat and wow! A gorgeous design. :) Both pictures were taken in natural light.

Piggy Polish and Wingin' It Lacquer Make a Fall Mani!

Hey there! This starts the slew of fall-themed manis I've done (and plan to do). It's that one time of the year to wear all the deep, earthy colors that reflect the beautiful leaves outside!

Taken at dusk in natural light.

I wanted to use my giveaway win, Falling Leaves, to create a autumn-inspired look... and this is what I came up with! I pulled from the red and orange glitter in Falling Leaves and placed some accent glequins on my dark green nails. I absolutely love that color, by the way. My boyfriend bought it for me and it's so luscious and deep and vampy. Sexy for this time of the season!

Nail Fail: Pastel Water Marble with Glitter Accents

Happy Monday, everyone! Today I've got a lovely nail fail for you to gawk at... a strange attempt at water marbeling with pastels.

Photo taken in shade.

Actually, the marbeling wasn't that bad. Once I added in some dots and glitter things got funky! When I purchased my 12 pack of glitter from eBay, they sent me a pot of clear iridescent glitters. I figured that they would add an extra touch of sparkle to things. WRONG. They kinda just blended in and were almost undetectable in person. I think they're made more for being worn over dark colors...

Seasonal Color Changing with Del Sol's Trick-or-Treat

Hi there! Today I've got an exciting polish to show you all- Del Sol's Trick or Treat. If you've never heard of Del Sol, it's because they're not really in the nail polish business. They manufacture all sorts of products that are activated by the sun and change colors, including polish! Unfortunately, I think that Trick or Treat is discontinued... but it's still available through other web merchants.

Both pictures taken in direct sunlight.

Here I've got on two coats of Del Sol over a quick coat of Scare-o-Lantern. You can see that without sun exposure this is a super sparkly and pretty orange. Once the sun has been hitting your nails for a few minutes (or seconds, even, depending on the sun's intensity), the color morphs into a deep purply black. I didn't really need the undies for this, but I was in a rush so I slapped some on to avoid having to put on three coats of Trick or Treat. You can totally see some sheet marks (I know! So bad!) because I went to bed right after this. Oopsies! ^_^;

Glittery Halloween Skittle Skulls

Happy Halloween! Today I've got my third Halloween look that I wore this year-- glitter bomb skulls!

This was a bunch of free-handing... free-hand skulls, free-hand glitter placement, free-hand dots... free-hand! I used my dotting tools to glob out a general skull shape, dotted on some eyes and a nose, then used my black striper to add in teeth grooves. From there, I added silver dots to my other fingers, dipped my entire pinky into hex glequins, then hand placed random glenquins around the skulls. Very sparkly with just a touch of spooky! :)

Halloween Glow-in-the-Dark Stripes

Hello there! Today I have one of 3 looks I wore this year for Halloween. I wanted to go with something fun and bold so I did alternating black and orange stripes!

The fun part about these is that I painted a coat of glow-in-the-dark over the orange, so I had glowing stripes at night! I also experimented with adding some glitter on the tips... that was definitely a fail. I mixed loose glitter into a blob of clear coat and dabbed it on my tips. I ended up with something close to a textured polish with almost no shine. Very strange... probably will not be trying that again!

This was also attempt #2 at a new nail shape... this time less of an extreme point. It worked out better this time with less of an extreme shape but no. Just no. The day after these pictures were taken, I broke my pointer nail clean off at the fingertip and cracked the side of my thumb. So needless to say, I'm rocking some shorties now. Oh well... maybe one day I can change nail shapes, but for now round is the way to go! :)

OPI Spotted Halloween

Hey there! Today I've got a quick look I threw together using OPI's Black Spotted and some fun Halloween neons. I painted on random splotches of colors then gave them a coat of Black Spotted to complete a colorful peek-a-boo look.

I was in a rush when I did this look and kinda laid on the Black Spotted a bit heavily (which is why my pinky is practically black!). See all those cracks? Oops... I should have let my base color dry a bit longer! Lessons learned...

NOTD: Summery Stripes (Really... lots and lots of stripes!)

Hi there! Today I've got a look that I sported a few weeks ago when it was a little more summer and a little less autumn. It looks so dull out today I needed to bring some color into things... and you can't deny that with this mani!

Taken near dusk, so my skin looks a bit off.

I started off with a white base coat to make everything pop, then went crazy with polish and my paintbrush as a I free-handed stripes! I tried to keep an orange/pink/purple theme but ended up sneaking in some greens and yellows. Overall... I should've planned the colors and placement of stripes a lot better. Everything's a little inconsistent and fuzzy. I also think I need to invest in actual nail art brushes (at least a striper) to help my designs look better. Look for a revamp in the future!

NOTD: Blue Mix-n-Match Featuring Zoya Polishes

Hello there!

Today I've got a quick look for you that I freehanded using some of the blue shades I have. I didn't realize it, but I actually have a lot of Blue Zoya polishes (which is strange, since I only have about 8 of their polishes!). In addition to the three below, I also have Zoya Natty, which I used as a base in this swatch post.

Taken in natural, overcast light.

I kinda mixed glitters and matte in this mani, and went with a silver & blue scheme. I heard that a lot of others were having staining issues with Liberty, so I was super careful to layer it over other polishes. This was my first experience with textured polish and I'm kinda "eh" about it.

Polishes Used

Pointer- Chelsea Girl over Zoya Phoebe with silver glittter accent of Color Club Fine Silver
Middle- Zoya Liberty over Phoebe with Fine Silver accent

Giveaway Win: Wingin' It Lacquer Fall Shades

Hey there everyone! Great news- I won another giveaway! I can definitely say that I love being a part of the nail polish world with all of the generous giveaways that are always happening! :)

This time I won three polishes from Wingin' It Lacquer: Burning Leaves, Falling Leaves, and Sizzler.

For whatever reason, Burning Leaves didn't have a label on it, but no worries! It's still a stunning color- a gorgeous coppery red color with a gold-ish shimmer. Next up is Falling Leaves, a yellow-based jelly with red and orange shards and micro glitter. This looks so pretty layered! Finally is Sizzler, a plum color with a silver foil in it. It has so much depth and is perfect for late fall when you want something vampy.

Here we have 2 coats of Burning Leaves, 1 coat of Falling Leaves over 2 coats of Burning Leaves; 4 coats of Falling Leaves (it's almost opaque!), and 2 coats of Sizzler. I love the way that Falling Leaves makes Burning Leaves a lovely orange color.... so perfect for fall!

A big thanks to Crystal from Wingin' It Lacquer for this fantastic giveaway gift!

Manicure Monday: Fresh Paint's Oatmeal Gives Me Mannequin Hands!

Happy Monday everyone! Have you ever had mannequin hands? This is what I think of every single time I end up painting my nails nude! :P I started off with one of the only nude polishes I own, then ended up mattifying the entire look for a more mannequin-esque look.

It's definitely a little creepy looking. But then again, I'm not that big on nude polishes. They either look too natural or too "off" in their attempt to look natural. Haha! Just too boring for me, I guess!

Giveaway Win: Sweet Heart Polish

Hello there! I've got exciting news to share... I was one of 4 winners in Sweet Heart Polish's giveaway! My prize was a surprise 3 mini polishes... and man, do I love surprises!

This is easily the cutest packaging I've seen!

These polishes are part of the upcoming Halloween collection that is soon to be released. I've secretly been wanting to purchase all of the Halloween collections I've been seeing recently, but I'm trying to be good and save money (we'll see how long that lasts!). My package contained a handwritten note from Cassandra (who creates and sells the polish), the three minis, and some Sweet Tarts. Yum!

(Click for a larger image.)

Alright- here the polishes! I was sent three shades: Holo-Scare, Scary Delight, and Scare-o-Lantern. How appropriate are those names, huh? Love it! First up is Holo-Scare, which is a lovely grayed-plum color  with a holo effect. This was gorgeous in the bottle but the holo was hard to see once applied. Next up is Scary Delight, a glitter topped that has a mix of small orange and purple glitter, orange hex glitter, and purple diamonds. This is such a pretty combo and applied quite nicely (although I did have to fish a bit for the diamonds). Finally is Scare-o-Lantern. Soooooo pretty! I love burnt orange colors and this one did not disappoint! I liked that it was frosty... you usually don't see frosty oranges.

Taken in natural lighting on an overcast day.

On my pinky I have 3 coats of Scary Delight and you can see that it needs undies. Next is 2 quick coats of Scare-o-Lantern, then Scare-o-Lantern with 1 1/2 coats of Scary Delight. Look how glowy! Finally, we have Holo-Scare, then Holo-Scare with 1 1/2 coats of Scary Delight. I really wish that the holo showed up a bit more, but it's still a lovely color. Removal of these polishes was a breeze (with the exception of my pinky... but we all know how glitters are!).

Overall, definitely beautiful and Halloween-y! Thanks Cassandra for holding the giveaway!

Manicure Monday: Pink and Purple Glitter

Hello there! Today I have a gorgeous mani to look at!

Taken in direct sunlight.

I decided to pair-up Scandalous with purple (a look I took from a picture I saw years ago on Tumblr!), then accented with more glitter and black studs. This picture is horribly, horribly color inaccurate. My purple is impossible to photograph and is much darker in person. Strangely enough, the Roxy is darker here than it is in person. >_< Stupid camera...

Review: Dr. Scholl's® For Her High Heel Insoles

As you know by now, I received a VoxBox from Influenster full of products to test out. This post, I feature insoles from Dr. Scholl's.

These insoles are advertised for use in high heels, which are something that I don't wear too often. It seemed like a great idea though! Relieve some pressure on the ball of my foot? Sure! Cushion the heel? Awesome!

The truth? These things kind of hurt. They put too much pressure on the underside of my foot and weren't long enough in the toe region. The toe area cut-off halfway on the ball of my foot and halfway off of it, so it felt annoying to walk on.

The good news is that these were super easy to put into the shoes and stayed in place very well! They're also a discreet clear color with a slight purple tint toward the toe area. Would I buy them independently? Probably not. Will I keep them in these shoes? Probably not. Oh well! It was a good idea!

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

NOTD: Pink, Pink, and Pink Glitter Bomb

Hello all!

Here's a quick look I did a few weeks ago. Please forgive the shitastic image... this was a last minute picture after I already had one nail chipping badly. That area of my pinky I have cropped out? NOTD: Blue Watercolor (and a New Nail Shape!)

Hello all!

I've been really intrigued by the stilleto/ pointed nail shape recently and decided to give it a shot. I carefully filed my normally round nails into semi-points and tried them out for a week.

Here they are! Nothing too crazy, but definitely something different. My verdict? Not the shape for me. It felt weird to have a different place of pressure on my nails and fingertips. I have to do a lot of typing for my job and it didn't feel that great to type with these.

In direct sunlight.

That being said, I couldn't stop looking at this mani! The cool shape was intriguing and the watercolor pattern I chose was beyond gorgeous in person.

Review: Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics

Hello there! Today I'm posting a quick review about Goody's Ouchless Ribbon Elastics. YAY! A beauty post! :D

Let me begin by saying that I have a lot of hair. Like... a lot of it. It's thick, wavy/curly, and I hate wearing it down. So I'm always throwing it into a loose bun or a pony tail. I stretch out a lot of hair ties, find a lot that don't support all of my hair, have some that pinch and pull, and have some that don't wrap around enough to hold a pony tail. So. Frustrating.

Look at that pretty color!

I'm new to the world of ribbon hair ties and was a bit weary toward using them. Pleasantly enough, they managed to support all of my hair. They're also super comfy (I've slept in them!), leave a minimal "hair tie line," and come in super pretty colors! The pack I got had one each of black, grey, a lighter grey, purple, and raspberry.

Holding all the hair!

Long story short, I would definitely buy these again. I have yet to see if they stretch out quickly, but for now I'm good to go!

I received this product complimentary for testing and review purposes from Influenster.

NOTD: Summer Neon

Holy Cheesus, I swear I'm still alive! I have all these posts to make and the pictures ready, and yet I never seem to actually get around to making the posts!

That being said, here's a bright and happy summer look that I wore recently!

Taken in the sun.

Taken in the shade.

I painted half my nail in one color, then chose another to fill-in the rest of the nail. Then I repeated the same color on the closer half of the next nail. That doesn't make much sense with words... just take a look! ^_^; 1/2 pink, 1/2 orange, 1/2 orange, 1/2 magenta, 1/2 magenta, 1/2 pink, repeat. Then I finished everything off with a glitter topcoat. Fun!

Swatch: Black Cat Lacquer Bloody Kisses

Hi there! Today I have a swatch of Black Cat Lacquer's Bloody Kisses. It's a gorgeous blend of red and mahogany glitters in a darkened black-ish jelly base. The shapes in here are hexes and squares.

This was a last minute picture, so apologies that it's not great. This shows one coat of Bloody Kisses over Sinful Color's Bleeding Heart, taken in direct sunlight. I love how the blackened base really helped darken the bright red of Bleeding Heart. Gorgeous! I can't wait to layer this over black!

Swatch: Lush Lacquer Midnight Affair

Hello there!

Today I have a random swatch for everyone to look at... Lush Lacquer's Midnight Affair.

I've shown one coat over Sinful Color's Bleeding Heart in shady natural light (also, with a bonus awkward leaf background!). Midnight Affair has matte white micro glitters, small black hexes, black and white bar glitter, and small red holo glitters. So pretty! Application was easy and required no dabbing- although you do have to be careful no bars are hanging off the side of your nail. Luckily the bars in this were flat on the nail too, so a beauty all around!

Nail Fail: Dragon Glitter

Introducing a new segment! Nail fails!

Because everyone's put something on their nails and gone, "Ew. This looks horrible!" Here we go!

In the sun!

In the shade!

So here we have a combo that I thought would look awesome! But I forgot how sheer this glitter is. And the base color, Dragon Lady, had a purple shimmer in the bottle that did not show up on the nail. Boo! I just didn't like the way this turned out. Oh well!

Happy Fourth of July! Here's a quick mani I did for the 4th!

It's that time of the year- NEONS!

Happy first day of summer everyone!

I've got a special set of swatches today... these are (80% at least) colors I won from Possibly Polished's giveaway! I won a set of Color Club minis from the Poptastic collection as well as green apple ChapStick and some great product samples. I seriously love the nail blogger community... there's always a giveaway somewhere that you might win! Anywhos- on to the polish!

Ugh. I clearly forgot to moisturize before snapping this pic. Ick. Before I go and label each of these shades, I would like to note that I can't find the polish names that were included in the 4-pack of polish. The bottles are unlabeled and from what I can tell, the packages contained a random sampling of 4 shades. That being said, I've made my best guess based off of other swatches floating around the internet. From pink to blue, we have:

Color Club Jackie Oh!
Color Club Koo Koo Cachoo
Funky Fingers Highlighter
Color Club Feelin' Groovy
Color Club Chelsea Girl

These were swatched without a white base and, with the exception of Highlighter, took about 3 coats to even out (Highlighter took at least 6!). Like most neons they were streaky for the first 2 coats and dried to that strange almost-matte-but-not-quite finish. Picture is with topcoat in the sun.

NOTD: Berry Princess

Hello there! Today I've got a girly look to share... a beautiful array of berry-colored glitters in a milky white base, with a tri-colored V half moon, finished with a heart rhinestone! Whew!

Basically, I started with a coat of white polish to make the Burrrberry pop then waited for it to dry. Then I did a basic tape manicure to mark off the V on my nail, painted it blue, waited for it to dry, then outlined in pink and purple. Finally I added some topcoat, a rhinestone, then more topcoat to finish the design.

See now? This is what happens when I have a lot of free time to do a manicure. We get more complex designs that take some time to do (waiting around for the polish to dry takes For. Ev. Er!) Looking at my pictures, it looks like my flash brought out the larger glitter in Burrrberry underneath the Vs... but they weren't noticeable in person. Weird!

Swatch: Glitterfied Nails Diamond Ring

So I recently bought a few minis from Glitterfied Nails and decided to swatch them for you here! This is the first of the polishes, Diamond Ring. It's a gorgeous combo of iridescent glitters that shine all sorts of colors in a clear base. Below is one coat of Diamond Ring over Zoya's Natty.

Formula wise, this was super easy to work with and required no dabbing. The base is rather thin and manageable (especially for a glitter polish!). You can really see the shift of colors in the 2nd picture; there's green, blue, orange, and gold from what I can mostly see. I plan on wearing this over pink for a delicate, girly look... but I can't wait to wear it over some black too!

NOTD: My First Attempt at Sugar-Spun

... and I'm not sure I like the technique. :/

What I learned while attempting this:
  • Getting nail polish to dry quickly when you actually want it to is impossible.
  • Once goopy enough, the polish then dries WAY too quickly.
  • Some polishes don't work for this technique... I wanted to do a nice purple and green, but my purple just wouldn't "spin."
  • It's impossible to get nice, thin strands.
  • It was hard to get strands to cover the entire nail instead of just half of it.
Anywhos... here's what I ended up with!

I know it's been a popular look around the Web lately, so here's my take on a rainbow gradient look.
